History

Known as the home of many historic Columbus city landmarks and higher education institutions, the Discovery District has a rich and storied past. It was once a stop on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War.

Architectural heritage

The early architecture developed mainly in the mid 1800’s was inspired by classical and French chateau styles. Today, a blend of beautiful historic homes combine with modern buildings to create a vibrant neighborhood for work and play. As the cultural epicenter of Columbus, the Discovery District offers something for everyone.

Columbus Metropolitan Library

The library system that would become Columbus Metropolitan Library got its start as the Public Library Reading Room, which opened in 1873 in City Hall. In 1903, a $200,000 gift from Andrew Carnegie provided the funding for Main Library. The building opened to the public in 1907.
